Where to Stay in Zhangjiajie: City or Wulingyuan

Where to stay based on what you plan to visit—and how to avoid booking in the wrong place.

By @mesapara1. I traveled through China in April 2026 and put together this page and guide to share everything I learned planning the trip on my own.

You search for Zhangjiajie, read a few articles, check the map—and still can’t work out where everything is. You’re not doing anything wrong. I had the same problem when I was planning my trip.

The name Zhangjiajie refers to three different things. It can refer to a city, a national forest park, or the wider region that includes both. The city and the park are about an hour apart.

That’s why travelers often book accommodation in the wrong place. The result is wasted travel time, a late start at the park, and arriving after the crowds have built up.

Zhangjiajie, Wulingyuan, and Tianmen Mountain: what’s where

Before you book a hotel, it helps to understand the geography. You’ll come across these four names often, but they refer to different places.

Zhangjiajie city is the main city in the region. The train station and airport are both here.

Tianmen Mountain is home to the famous Heaven’s Gate. It’s right by Zhangjiajie city, and the cable car station is near the train station.

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is about an hour from the city. Its towering stone pillars inspired the floating mountains in Avatar.

Wulingyuan is the town at the park entrance and the most convenient base for visiting it.

In short, the region’s two main attractions are in different places, about an hour apart.

Visiting Tianmen Mountain? Stay in Zhangjiajie City

Tianmen Mountain is the mountain with Heaven's Gate, the famous opening in the rock reached by climbing 999 steps. The mountain is also known for its glass walkways built along the cliffside.

If you're going, stay in Zhangjiajie City, as close to the cable car station as possible.

It’s simply more convenient. The cable car and shuttle buses to the park depart from this area, so staying nearby makes for an easier start the next morning. And at Tianmen Mountain, arriving early makes a difference.

Visiting Zhangjiajie National Forest Park? Stay in Wulingyuan

If you’re visiting Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, known for its Avatar-like mountains, stay in Wulingyuan, as close to the park entrance as possible.

One important detail: the park has several entrances. The most convenient is the East Gate, also known as Wulingyuan Gate. There are restaurants, supermarkets, and other essentials within a short walk—something you won’t find near every entrance.

Choosing the wrong entrance can mean starting on the opposite side of the park from the area you want to visit, costing you hours on shuttle buses and cable cars.

Wulingyuan is also the base for the Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon, which lies outside the national forest park, about an hour from the East Gate.

Booking a hotel is the easy part

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park was by far the hardest place to plan for on my trip to China—and the hardest to navigate once I got there.

This isn’t a park you can simply walk across. It has a network of shuttle buses, cable cars, and elevators that take you to different areas. Not all areas connect directly, so taking the wrong route can cost you a lot of time. There are also several entrances, and each provides access to different parts of the park.

I learned this the hard way. I took the wrong route, and when I tried to leave, I discovered there was no transport from where I was. The only option was to walk downhill to the exit—an hour of stairs, one flight after another. I kept thinking they’d end around the next bend, but they didn’t. The next day, even walking down the hotel stairs was painful.

Without a plan, it’s easy to spend the day waiting for shuttle buses, take the wrong ones, and need several days to see the park.

That wasn't my experience. One or two well-organized days are enough to see most of the areas and the main sights. The difference isn't how many days you give it, it's the order you visit the areas in and which transport you take on each leg.

That’s the information I found hardest to piece together online, and the part that took the most work to figure out during and after my trip.

How much does accommodation cost in Zhangjiajie?

Accommodation is relatively inexpensive here compared with China’s major cities.

A hotel in Zhangjiajie or Wulingyuan can cost you half or less of what you'd pay for an equivalent one in Shanghai or Beijing. And you're not trading down for it: these are very good hotels.

The value for money is particularly good.

If you're coming from booking in the big cities, you'll see the difference the moment you open the search. I go into it in where to stay in Shanghai and where to stay in Beijing.

How to plan your time in Zhangjiajie

Choosing where to sleep is the first step, and in Zhangjiajie it matters more than anywhere else in China, because it decides how much time you lose getting around. What comes next—how to see the park without losing your mind—is what the guide solves.

Frequently asked questions

Are Zhangjiajie and Wulingyuan the same place?

Should I stay in Zhangjiajie city or in Wulingyuan?
It depends on what you plan to visit. Stay in Zhangjiajie City for Tianmen Mountain and in Wulingyuan for Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. If you’re visiting both, stay near each attraction the night before rather than traveling back and forth.
Which park entrance should I use?
The East Gate, also known as Wulingyuan Gate, is the most convenient for most visitors, with restaurants and other services nearby. The park has other entrances, but choosing one that doesn’t fit your route can cost you hours on shuttle buses and cable cars.
